You could super glue a laser-pointer to the n800 and create a range finder with
the built-in camera. The camera is on one edge of the unit; glue the
laser-pointer to the other edge pointing absolutely parallel with the camera.

Write software that looks for the brightest point in the image, then measure
how far from the center of the image the laser dot is. The FURTHER you are from
an object, the CLOSER the laser dot will be to the center of the CCD image.
Obviously, it'll be more accurate the closer you are to an object. The camera
on the n800 is pretty low resolution, but it should be high enough for indoor
work like this.
